Newcastle-based leisure business STR Enterprises has bought Wallsend Golf Club for an undisclosed fee, in order to expand its portfolio beyond bars and hotels.

The firm acquired the 170-acre site through its subsidiary Keeping Inn, and is planning a major refurbishment of the club. It is also planning a 100 bedroom, £5 million hotel in Sunderland to cater for the high-end three star market.

John Sanderson, managing director of STR, commented: “Golf courses represent a big opportunity for us to grow the business as they provide a lot of extra land for development.”

He added: “Although we are aware of the current economic situation affecting the leisure market we still believe we have a wide enough range to keep on growing the business.”
