The battery power and electronic components business is to acquire the trade and assets of the struggling business using its existing capital resources.

Blazepoint supplies ‘rugged’ computer and hand-held devices to the commercial and military markets across the world. According to a statement, the business has a reputation for adapting off-the-shelf equipment to work beyond the original manufacturers specification.

Gary Marsh, chief executive of Solid State, comments: ‘We have known and competed against the Blazepoint business for many years.

‘The unification of our two businesses under the brand ‘Steatite Blazepoint’ creates the UK market leader in ruggedised computers and handheld devices and substantially strengthens Solid State’s presence in the transportation sector.’

Speaking to mandadeals earlier in the year, Marsh said that the business would be looking to build on its three key sectors of battery packs, general computer systems and the component market. He added that the business was particularly proud of achieving a triple-digit hike in profits.

For the 12 months ended 30 June 2011, Blazepoint reported turnover of £3.1 million and pre-tax profit of £25,000.

Marsh says that Solid State has a chosen strategy of purchasing underperforming businesses, with Blazepoint showing good upside potential.

He adds: ‘It is our belief that the efficiencies that we bring to bear on the Blazepoint business, plus the additional cross selling opportunities, will results in a significant increase in future profitability for Solid State.’
