Beginning development as a memory aid, this month’s GrowthBusiness Object of Desire the Vicon Revue is now aiming for the Facebook generation.

The Vicon Revue is a wearable camera that was originally designed as a research tool and aid for people who suffer from memory loss or impairment.

Vicon, the company behind this worthy gadget, has been producing motion capture systems for 20 years, creating crowd scenes for films and capturing moves for video games.

As soon as the device is turned on, it starts taking photos, triggered by internal sensors, through its fish eye lens, which offers a 130-degree view. The camera is based on Microsoft’s SenseCam technology, which studies have shown can help patients recall past events.

Uploaded images can be viewed one by one or as a time-lapse video, while the 2GB memory means the Revue can capture 60,000 photos – the equivalent of 12 days. The device can also be used for market research purposes, teaching projects, monitoring and in documentary making.

The camera currently retails for £500 via the Vicon website, which is a small price to pay for many users. The company looks likely to release a version of the Revue for the consumer market, which will surely appeal to the Facebook/Twitter generation.
