A Cardiff-based independent TV production company has strengthened its capabilities after buying one of its rivals. The Boomerang Group bought Teledu Apollo for an undisclosed sum.

The acquired business specialises in providing content for Welsh language broadcaster S4C and has been awarded more than 140 commissions by the channel since it was established in 1993.

This is the latest acquisition in Boomerang’s growth strategy that is designed to consolidate its business to add scale and scope to its operations.

Teledu’s founding directors, Paul Jones and Lona Llewelyn Davies, said in a joint statement: “Before agreeing this deal we had worked together on a number of projects with the Boomerang Group, notably the successful tender for S4C’s Planed Plant contract. This gave us the confidence to explore the benefits of taking the relationship further.

“We are convinced this deal has a compelling logic that will enhance our opportunities for programme development and delivery, training and staff development and provide a higher profile for independent production in Wales,” they added.

Boomerang’s legal adviser was Jon Fernandez Lewis, a partner at MLM, who has worked with the group on several of its previous acquisitions.

“This acquisition went pretty much according to plan,” Fernandez Lewis said. “This sector is a rapidly evolving one and the Boomerang Group, through acquisitions and organic growth, is actively embracing that evolution. The group now has several very strong brands.”

The vendors were advised on the financial issues of the disposal by KTS Owens Thomas. Its team was led by director Gareth Lynn and senior client manager Adrian Dixon.

The firm provided strategic advice on the sale as well as handling the valuations and managed the response to due diligence. It also provided tax services, which included negotiating and advising on a tax mitigation plan.

Boomerang produces more than 350 hours of television each year for S4C, Channel 4, BBC, ITV, Sky and the Discovery Channel. Its content includes documentaries, lifestyle programmes, children’s series and dramas.

Teledu’s productions include Darn o Dir, a drama about the lives of young people in rural Wales, as well as a number of children’s series and a television adaptation of Caryl Lewis’s award novel, Martha Jac a Sianco.
