A buy-out lead to a breakthrough

Katie Small, managing director, Mercury West Associates Insurance Solutions, explains why buying out a business partner has been her best business decision.

‘I was a silent partner in Mercury West Associates Insurance Solutions when it started in 2004. Initially our market was high-net-worth individuals with a view to providing superior cover.

About two years ago, I became involved in the company on a full-time basis. The insurance market was becoming more limited as insurers withdrew from certain areas and I felt we were losing out. We were trying to be all things to all people rather than focusing on what we’re good at, which is adding value to our customers.

My business partner didn’t share the vision I had, so I bought him out. Now we like to think of ourselves as an insurance concierge service. It’s the best thing that I could have done for me and for the company because our reputation today is second to none.’
