Green Hat buy for IBM

Software business IBM has picked up where it left off last year with another acquisition.

Green Hat, which provides software quality and testing services for cloud-based products, has been purchased by the New York-based business.

In December IBM paid £280 million to buy loss-making analytics company DemandTec, which followed on from its September acquisition of UK-based i2 for an undisclosed amount.

Kristof Kloeckner, general manager at IBM Rational, comments: ‘This acquisition extends IBM’s leadership in driving business agility and software quality by changing the way enterprises can manage software development cost, test cycle time and risk.

‘Green Hat’s application virtualisation capabilities will help our customers accelerate their delivery of business critical software.’

Under the terms of the deal London-headquartered Green Hat is to join IBM’s Rational Software business. Financial terms for the deal were not disclosed.

The Green Hat software testing products will also be offered through IBM Global Business Services Application Management Services.

Peter Cole, chief executive officer at Green Hat, adds: ‘We are looking forward to bringing Green Hat’s innovative application virtualisation and continuous integration testing expertise to IBM customers.’

Commenting on the deal Michael Azoff, principal analyst at Ovum, says the newly purchased company will help complement IBM’s existing portfolio.

He adds: ‘Green Hat provides a virtualised solution to this complexity that allows individual virtualised components to be switched in turn to their live counterparts for effective systems testing to be performed.’
