Browser and mobile games developer Zattikka has secured $5.5 million (£3.6 million) in a funding round led by Notion Capital.

Notion, together with a group of private investors, is backing Zattikka’s parent company Expedite 5. The funds will be invested in recruitment, research and development, and marketing for Zattikka, which is looking to broaden its portfolio of games.

Harald Ludwig, co-chair of Lionsgate Entertainment, is one of the investors in the funding round, and will join Zattikka’s board.

Tim Chaney, CEO and co-founder of Zattikka, says global revenue for online gaming was $2.25 billion in 2008 and is growing at 20 per cent per year.

‘This much broader audience is being driven by females and premium gamers developing a passion for casual social gaming,’ adds Chaney.

Ian Milbourn, founding partner at Notion Capital, says the online gaming market is highly competitive, adding that Zattikka is ‘dedicated to owning as much [intellectual property] as it can’.

The company acquired gaming portal Gimme5Games in September last year.
