Wrekin Construction has bought Toft Johnson, a Staffordshire-based civil engineering and construction group, for an undisclosed sum.

Peter Greenwood, Wrekin’s joint managing director, said: “This acquisition will give us an increasingly diverse client base that reduces our exposure to any single area of the economy and provides a robust defence against this and any future downturn.”

Toft is one of five main contractors on the Renew North Staffordshire panel – a partnership of local organisations that are working together to deliver a £2.3 billion investment programme.

The acquired company employs 35 staff in public buildings, schools, hospitals and warehousing sectors, undertaking contracts in the West Midlands. Recent projects have been undertaken for the NHS, the Royal Mail and the Ministry of Defence, with contract values typically range from £50,000 to more than £2 million.

Wrekin was founded in 1960 and has more than 530 full-time employees across England and Wales.
