Wellness and health start-up incubator launched by Alliance Boots

A new collaboration between Alliance Boots and BioCity will see the creation of a new business incubator focused on health and wellness.

In an effort to foster innovation, Alliance Boots is forming MediCity – which will be providing start-up and growing companies in the health and wellness sector with office and laboratory space.

Based at the Nottingham Enterprise Zone on the Alliance Boots site in Beeston, start-ups will also be able to leverage MediCity subsidiary BioCity’s experience of growing businesses in specialised incubator environments.

Alex Gourlay, chief executive of the Health & Beauty Division at Alliance Boots, comments, ‘We warmly welcome MediCity onto our site. Alliance boots and BioCity’s complementary expertise will attract businesses to MediCity and further enhance our existing world-class innovation hub in Nottingham.

‘[This development] illustrates our progress in developing the site, as well as our continued commitment to Nottingham and the wider UK community.’

BioCity Nottingham manages business incubation sites in Nottingham, Glasgow and Alderley Edge. The company provides business support, finance and laboratory and office facilities to ‘high potential’ bioscience, pharmaceutical, medtech, healthcare and environmental companies and their service providers. The company expanded in 2012 with the opening of BioCity Scotland, and also manages the recently-announced BioHub at Alderley Park in Cheshire.

More on start-up incubators:

Glenn Crocker, CEO of BioCity, adds, ‘MediCity is a timely addition to the thriving healthcare and medical technology sector in the UK.

‘I am particularly excited by the benefits Alliance Boots market insights can bring to early-stage companies, with the potential to accelerate development and provide a possible route to market.’

Crocker emphasises that MediCity, and Alliance Boots, are interested in speaking to businesses which are both established, and still developing a concept.

It is hoped that the creation of the incubator will encourage new businesses to locate in the Nottingham area.
