According to new research, it’s not just contestants on Deal or No Deal who don’t get to see the banker.

Around 60 per cent of SMEs never see their bank manager, says the Bank of Cyprus, while only one-fifth see them on a yearly basis. Only 13 per cent said they see them every few months.

Tony Leahy, head of communications at the Bank of Cyprus UK, says, ‘The fact remains that a large number of SMEs are not taking the time to meet with their bank manager – a worrying insight especially in the current climate. It is clearly a negative indicator of the quality of relationship that exists between many businesses and their banks.’

Of the 500 SMEs surveyed, four in ten said they feel that they are either treated like ‘just another customer’ or that their bank manager has a very poor understanding of their business, with only one in twenty saying that their bank manager has a good understanding of what they do.

Recent research from the ICAEW said that banks need to be more consistent and transparent in their relationships with small and medium sized businesses.
