Chat Moderators director Rob Marcus explains why his best business decision was giving his wife a job at the company.

Six months after launching Chat Moderators I asked my wife to join the company, initially as financial controller but not long afterwards as operations director. It could have wrecked our marriage, but we needed her detail-oriented approach in the business.

I admit that our private meetings concerning strategic direction run on a shorter fuse than I’ve experienced in previous organisations, but whether this is a function of being married or simply of being joint owners I’m not sure. We manage our work/life balance by rarely discussing work at home and we act very professionally in the office in our joint dealings with staff, clients and suppliers.

Time has proved the decision right: we’re still together and the business is in its ninth successful year.
