Oracle Linux has been enhanced with Zero Downtime Software Updates following the acquisition of startup company Ksplice.

The ‘zero downtime’ services provided by Ksplice will bolster Oracle’s Unbreakable Enterprise Linux kernel and become a standard feature in its Linux Premier Support offering.

Customers will be able to avoid the ‘costly and disruptive’ system reboots that occur with monthly Linux kernel security updates, diagnostics patches and critical bug fixes Oracle said.

‘System administrators are forced to choose between known best practices and added operational costs when administering Linux updates,’ says Jeff Arnold.

Oracle expects to make Ksplice technology a standard feature of Oracle Linux Premier Support.

In a letter to customers, Coekaerts said Oracle Linux premier support customers will receive immediate access to Ksplice technology with no additional cost to subscriptions. Oracle Linux Basic and Network Support customers will need to upgrade to premier support.
