London-based United Business Media plc has bought Exposure Events UK, an exhibition business that focuses on the building and refurbishment of new secondary schools.

Exposure Events was sold by its founders for an initial £600,000 in cash. The agreement includes a performance-related consideration of up to £1.9 million to be paid in the next two years.

The company was acquired for United Business Media’s European magazine and events business, CMPi.

CMPi’s chief executive, Gary Hughes, said he bought Exposure Events due to its growth potential.

Exposure Events’ Building Schools Exhibition and Conference was launched in Harrogate in 2006 to target local authorities, construction companies and consultants involved in the rebuilding and renewal of secondary schools.

In 2007 the event attracted more than 100 exhibitors and some 500 paying attendees and this year it re-locates to Manchester.

The event fits CMPi’s built environment product portfolio and establishes a presence for the business in the northwest where significant regeneration and redevelopment is anticipated in the coming years.

United Business Media provides commercial information through its print, online and event operations. It has 5,000 staff in more than 30 countries and made an operating profit in 2006 of £137 million from a £740 million turnover.
