UK-born entrepreneur David Wolfe is bringing his mattress retail business Leesa back home after a successful launch in the US; where he raised $9m in funding.
The UK operation will be run from a Manchester base, close to the business’s North-West manufacturing operations.
The UK follows a hugely successful period for the company in the US. It secured $9m from private equity firm TitleCard Capital and has sold more than 10,000 mattresses since its January launch.
The business also won the Shopify ‘Build a Business’ award by generating the highest profits of the companies in its category between October 2014 and May 2015. The prize included personal mentoring from Richard Branson on Necker Island.
All of this has contributed to sales of more than $2m in May alone. The company’s USP sees it do away with different firmnesses of mattresses and bring a “universal feel” to all its products.
Co-founder and CEO Wolfe declared himself “incredibly proud” to be making the UK his business’s second market – with a focus on local manufacturing.
“We at the busy intersection of an industry ripe for disruption, with a ground-breaking product, and an extraordinary local team of direct-to-consumer, online marketers, designers and operators,” he continued. “Leesa is already a run-away success in the US and we’re determined to repeat this on my home turf.
“This is the most exhilarating business I’ve been involved in so far and it’s unbelievable to think that after just 6 months, we’re on track to achieve $30 million in sales in our first year and have already helped more than 10,000 people sleep better.”
