Intertek buys NDT Services to bolster aerospace offering

Quality services business Intertek Group has acquired NDT Services as it looks to expand its presence in the aerospace and power sectors.

Non-destructive testing company NDT Services (NSL) has been purchased by Intertek Group in a deal worth £17 million along with its parent company Materials Testing & Inspection Services.

NSL provides on-site and laboratory based non-destructive testing of industrial components used in applications such as aircraft, pipelines and power stations.

According to London-headquartered Intertek, Derby-based NSL ‘enhances’ its existing quality and integrity management services for owners and operators in the space.

Stefan Butz, group executive vice president of Intertek’s Industry and Assurance division, comments, ‘This complementary addition demonstrates Intertek’s commitment to offer a complete NDT technical services proposition to our oil, gas, petrochemical and power customers.

‘In addition, by combining Intertek’s global presence and existing analytical capabilities with NSL’s strong reputation and market leading position within the European aerospace we can extend a full service solution to our aerospace customers.’

NDT Services was originally founded in 1973 as Non-Destructive Tester, part of the British Engine Insurance Group, based at East Midlands Airport. Following a management buy-out in 1986 the company was renamed NDT (Midlands) and became NDT Services in 1996.

Graham Tomlinson, managing director of NDT Services, says he is ‘very proud’ to have attracted the attention of Intertek.

He adds, ‘The two businesses complement each other perfectly and we are looking forward to offering NDT services to Intertek’s customer base.’
