BSkyB invests in UK start-up

Media and telecommunications company BSkyB has acquired a stake in technology start-up Zeebox.

Former BBC iPlayer chief technology officer Anthony Rose launched Zeebox in October alongside former senior EMI executive Ernesto Schmitt.

Zeebox technology allows users of tablets, smartphones and PCs to see who else is watching shows and interact with tweets and status updates.

Under the terms of the deal BSkyB is acquiring a 10 per cent stake and receives exclusive UK rights to integrate the technology into its own mobile applications (apps).

Schmitt, co-founder and chief executive officer of Zeebox, comments: ‘Sky has a strong track record of innovation, and we are delighted to partner with them to deliver Zeebox’s social TV vision to millions of Sky homes.

‘Thanks to Sky’s backing we now also have the resources and expertise to set our sights firmly on international expansion alongside further innovation here in the UK and Ireland.’

On the back of the deal BSkyB is to incorporate Zeebox’s technology into its apps and launch later in 2012.

Emma Lloyd, Sky’s director of emerging products, adds: ‘Sky took an early position of leadership with companion devices, having recognised the demand from our customers to use second screens to discover, enjoy and interact with their favourite content.

‘The integration of Zeebox’s innovative technology will enable us to make the companion device experience even richer and more engaging.’

While exact details of the acquisition are undisclosed the deal is for a multimillion-pound amount.
